Open Door Or Closed Circuit: Are Digital Locks As Safe As Key Locks?

At Keeler Hardware, we’ve been in the home security business for 50 years. So we were disturbed, but not surprised, to learn that 2.5% of Australian houses are broken into each year.

What did shock us was finding out that, even with Australia having the fifth-highest home burglary rate in the world, 33% of the population still regularly leave a spare key "hidden" somewhere outside their property. Guilty?

In this post, the friendly team at Keeler Hardware is here to advise you on how to keep you, and your possessions safe. And we won’t judge. But with one home broken into every three minutes, and lax practices making it easy for opportunistic thieves to ransack people’s properties, it could be time to explore the latest in secure technology: a digital lock.

Unlocking the code

A digital or keyless lock operates on the same principle as keyless car entry. It’s a smart use of cutting-edge technology for a simple purpose: opening a door without a key. There are different models, with some allowing entry by card, fob or biometrics (thumb scan), and others linked by Bluetooth or WiFi to smartphone apps.

Wireless-enabled keyless locks allow people to manage access to a property remotely. This makes them increasingly popular with those wanting to open their doors to clients, contractors or guests without the hassle of having to greet them in person or leave a spare key in a safe (let alone under a doormat!).

Digital locks are being adopted by everyone from businesses working with multiple suppliers, to Airbnb hosts who can set each of their guests a temporary, unique PIN code. This can even be programmed to expire at the guest's agreed departure time.

Open and shut case?

But does a digital or keyless lock security really unlock peace of mind for businesses and property owners? Keeler Hardware is often asked if digital locks are as safe as traditional turn-key versions. Bearing in mind that Australian insurance companies have specific requirements to consider before making any purchase, we believe both options are secure; it’s really a question of preference.

On the one hand, whether your traditional front door lock is “safe” depends on a few factors: is it a deadlock? How many people have a copy? Multiple copies of turn-keys can be cut and handed out to anyone. Was the lock installed by a professional locksmith and has it seen a lot of traffic? Most burglars come in through the front door, so a dodgy product that can be picked in a few minutes isn’t going to offer much protection.

With digital locks, there are different considerations. Just like smartphones, fingerprints on a touchpad can build up a pattern of use that clever thieves can use to work out a PIN code. Some models have fingerprint-resistant screens, but we recommend keeping a supply of computer wipes handy.

Hack to the future

The main security issue with digital locks is if they are linked to smartphones and WiFi; this increases the possibility of them being hacked. It's true that with any smart device, a determined hacker can find a way to compromise the security of your system. It's also important to remember that companies are developing new, advanced security features all the time.

In fact, cybersecurity concerns in the early days of digital locks actually led to manufacturers designing stronger controls. Make sure to read recent product reviews and talk to experts like Keeler Hardware about the latest innovative security features for keyless units. You can always opt for a lock with biometric access if that gives you more reassurance.

Ultimately, a security system needs to fit its user’s needs. Let’s face it, not all of us are technologically savvy; and good old-fashioned key locks will always be a reliable, sturdy choice. But just between us, whether you’re investing in a solid deadbolt or upgrading to a digital lock, either option is smarter than putting the key under the mat and seeing your valuables end up at the local Cash Converters.
